Abstract
Based on the cognitive development of elementary school students in general have difficulty in understanding mathematics that is abstract. One of the material taught in learning Mathematics in Elementary School is geometry. Evidence in the field shows that student geometry learning outcomes are still low. Based on these problems, the alternative solutions to overcome them by applying the Van Hiele Theory. This study aims to describe: 1) the location of students' learning difficulties in building space; 2) factors causing difficulties for students in building space; 3) alternative solutions to the difficulty of learning material in building space. This research is a qualitative study with research subjects of fifth grade students of SDN 1 Gatak taken from 10 of 27 students. The technique of collecting data uses test, interview, and documentation methods. While data analysis using qualitative descriptive data analysis techniques include the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation and data verification. The validity of the data uses source triangulation techniques and method triangulation. The results of the study show that: 1) students have difficulty in mentioning concrete objects to construct space, explain the nature of building space, explain the relationship of cubes and beams, and difficulties in the ability of mathematical calculations; 2) some of the factors that cause these difficulties are the lack of students' understanding of the material and supporting media; 3) alternative problem solving difficulties, namely the use of media in learning and improving basic understanding of geometry material.
