Abstract
This aims of this study are (1) to find out the intentions of expressive utterances in The Fault in Our Stars Movie and (2) to describing the politeness strategy of the expressive utterances in The Fault in Our Stars Movie Manuscript. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research are utterances which contain the intention of expressive utterances and politeness strategy used by the characters. The data sources are the manuscript and its film. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation and observation methods. The researcher used the theory by Searle (2000) and Austin (in Horn and Ward, 2006) to find out the intention of expressive utterance and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory in identifying the politeness strategy. The result of the research revealed that: (1) there are eleven expressive utterances used by the characters in this movie such as pleasure 2.3%, like 10.5%, dislike 10.5%, thanking 8.5%, apologizing 10.5%, blaming 2.3%, praising 18%, hopefulness 5.5%, sadness 6.5%, anger 8.5%, and condoling 3.5% (2) there are four types of politeness strategies such as bald on record 15%, positive politeness strategies 55%, negative politeness strategy 25%, off record strategy 5%. Praising and positive politeness strategy becomes the most dominant of the intention of expressive utterance and politeness strategy used by the characters in this movie.
