Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out and describe social loneliness in migrant students in Surakarta City. This study uses phenomenological qualitative methods, data collection is done by semi-structured interviews. Data were obtained from 5 subjects with the criteria of Surakarta Muhammadiyah University students who were migrants outside Java representing five provinces in Indonesia and currently residing in Surakarta City with a minimum of ± 3 years of wandering. Data analysis is done by arranging and coding data, determining themes, searching for categories, explaining categories, and discussing research results. The results showed that the subject during wandering in Surakarta City experienced social loneliness with various factors, intensity, and characteristics. Judging from the subject statement, the emergence of loneliness is related to internal and external factors, such as lack of communication, absence of activities performed, expectations of social relations that are not in accordance with reality, lack of quality friendship relationships, and introvert personality possessed by the subject. The social loneliness experienced by all subjects is temporary. Subjects experience loneliness too because they do not fulfill the perceptual aspects of social relations, aspects of views about social reinforcement and aspects of the need for intimacy.
