Abstract
This study has two objectives. (1) Identify the form of student language politeness strategies to lecturers in whatsapp social media communication discourse. (2) Describe the function of language politeness used by students to lecturers on whatsapp social media communication discourse. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases and sentences that have the value of positive and negative politeness of the student's speech to the lecturer on whatsapp social media communication discourse. The source of the data in this study is student speech to lecturers on whatsapp social media communication discourse in the 2015 PBI Evaluation group. Data collection in this study uses the documentation method and see how to write the free libas technique. The data analysis technique in this study uses intralingual matching techniques. The results of this study indicate that the strategy of student politeness in lecturers to lecturers on whatsapp social media communication discourse is realized into two strategies, namely positive and negative politeness strategies. The strategy of positive pilteness is realized into eight forms. Namely using the identity marker of the opposite person, exspressing gratude, giving greetings, giving questions, avoiding disapproval, giving gifts, and showing optimism. Negative politeness strategies are realized into three forms, namely apologizing, minimizing force, and rejection.
