Abstract

This study aims to describe the errors and the causes of errors in solving word context problems in the topic of linear equations one variable viewed from student’s learning styles based on Newman’s Error Analysis (NEA). The analysis was conducted based on Newman’s Error Analysis which consists of five stages, namely reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding errors. This is a qualitative descriptive study involving all students of grade VII at SMP Muhammadiyah AL-Kautsar PK Kartasura academic year 2018/2019. Data collection methods used by researchers are questionnaires, tests, interview methods, and documentation. The validity of the data is done by technical triangulation. The data analysis technique used is by data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that students who have a visual learning style make mistakes in the transformation steps, process skills and answer writing, students who have auditory learning styles make mistakes in the process skills and answer writing steps, and students who have kinesthetic learning styles make mistakes in step transformation, process skills and answer writing. Transformation errors are caused by lack of mastery in the prerequisite material, namely linear inequality and students are not careful in making mathematical models, process skill errors are caused by students not being careful in performing algebraic operations and not mastering the material, answer writing errors caused by students not checking the answers written and students want to shorten the process time.
