Abstract

The aim of this research is to know elementary students’ ability when expressing their idea, concept, and experience in written descriptive text. Writing is a course which have less attention at school. The technique of collecting data in this research are using observation, interview, and practice test. The subject of this research are five grade students of SDN 3 Tumang, Cepogo, Boyolali. Based on observation, interview, and writing practice of making descriptive text, the result shows there are 166 mistakes of 222 sentences having complete structure or 74,8% ; 56 sentences uncomplete structure or 25,2%, and there are some sentence structure pattern. Based on the analysis result of spelling application, there are 237 mistakes of 933 or 25,4% consist of: 117 mistakes of 272 in using capitalize word or 43%, 32 of 190 punctuation mistakes or 16%, 36 of 190 or 21% mistakes in using unsuitable word, 31 of 91 or 34% preposition mistakes, and 21 of 190 or 11% mistakes in writing less or over word. Based on the research about obviously of meaning or content, the result shows that there are 44 of 206 sentences written by the students having obvious meaning or content, while 162 sentences having unclear meaning or content.
