Abstract

The research aims at: (1) creating fairy tale learning media, (2) testing feasibility, and (3) testing the effectiviness of sociocultural-based fairy tale to the students' writing skill in the integrated thematic learning of the first grade students of SD Muhammadiyah Program KhususBoyolali.Research and development adapted from Borg andGall's design (1983) includes: (a) research and collecting information, (b) planning, (c) initial product development, (d) initial trials, (e) product revisions, (f) wide field trials, (g) product revisions, (h) operational trials, (i) final product results, (j) dissemination. Subjects of the research are teachers and students of SD and MI Muhammadiyah Program Khusus Boyolali. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, preliminary observations, expert assessments, teacher and student questionnaire, and the worksheets of cursive writing skill. Mann-whitney test was used in the analysis of technical data with a significance level of 0.05%. Results of the expert assessments show that the fairy tale product is feasible in the category of "excellent" by material experts and "good" by linguist and media experts. Teacher and students' response in using fairy tale media show "excellent" category. Results of the effectiveness tests using Mann-whitney test show that the fairy tale product has been effectively used to improve the students’ writing skill in p value < 0.05. Pre-test stage resulted in 0.860 and 0.189. Post-test resulted in p value < 0,05 % i.e. 0.005 dan 0.006. To conclude, sociocultural-based fairy tale is feasible and effective to be used in the thematic learning to improve the students’ writing skill.
