Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the structural elements of the ‘metal opera’ drama such as character and characterization, plot, point of view, style and theme based on individual psychological perspective. This research is a qualitative research. The data are taken from document analysis. The object of the study is the striving for superiority of Gabriel, the major character of the Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia. The result of study shows that Avantasia composed by Tobias Sammet is about human struggle for their goals of life. Beginning from feeling of weakness or incompleteness that rise up the feeling of inferiority. To compensate this feeling, human is forced to attempt to strive for their superiority. In this section, human will have an idea to reach their goal of life, they will have fictional finalism, which guide them to be superior or perfect. Supported by human creative power and human social interest, human will strive to be superior and attempt to compensate their feeling of inferior. The metal opera of Tobias Sammet wants to criticize the churchmen like pope Clement VIII for thinking that they hold they only truth that they have to keep the normal people ignorant for their own good, not realizing that the church men themselves are to blinded to recognize the truth. Therefore, the Christendom and the Roman Catholic Church have important part in the plot.
