Abstract

The research aimed to analyze error and to know causing the mistake of class VII students of SMP Negeri 2 Colomadu in solving the set story problem based on Newman’s error analysis. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. Subject used in this study are class VII A SMP Negeri 2 Colomadu. Technique of data in this research is to using the test method and interviews. Data validation was done by triangulation technique. Data analysis technique was done by means of data reduction, data presentation, and making conclusion. The result of the research shows that (1) the error of reading is mistake in reading the words in the problem, the misunderstanding is writing what is known and asked but not according to the problem request, writing what is known but not writing what is asked and don’t understand the significance of the problem,the mistake of the transformation cannot be using the formula to the right,the rror of the rocess skills is a mistake in the steps used to solve the problem,the mistake of the conclusion is student are accustomed to writing the conclution but there are still many student who make this mistake because it is not according the request (2)the cause of the error are not careful, not focus when reading the problem, don’t understand the significance of the problem, forget the material taught by teacher, less understanding the symbols commonly used in set story proble, forgot to use the right set formula and in a hurry in writing conclusion.
