Abstract

This research studies about representative utterance in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone movie manuscript. The writer chooses this topic because there are many violations and obeys Grice’s maxim in this movie manuscript. In this research, the writer focuses on the types of representative utterance based on Grice’s maxim and the speaker’s intention. The writer takes the data from Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone movie manuscript. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation method and technique of noting which can be found in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone movie manuscript. The writer classifies the data based on Grice’s maxim and then applies the speech act theory to find the speaker’s intention. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds many violations and obeys Grice’s maxim, there are violations and obeys of Quality maxim, Quantity maxim and Manner maxim. The dominant violation of Grice’s maxim in this movie manuscript is Quality maxim and the dominant obey of Grice’s maxim in this movie manuscript is Quantity maxim. Related to the meaning, the writer also gets nine kinds of meaning, namely asserting, asking, informing, mocking, boasting, cheating, teasing, tempting and suspecting
