Abstract
This research aims at observing the teaching of English at SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 7 SURAKARTA. The research was conducted at SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 7 Surakarta Jl. Tentara Pelajar No.1 Jebres Surakarta in 2005.The problem of the study is how the implementation of teaching English to the first year students of SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 7 Surakarta is conducted. The objective of this research is to describe the teaching learning process of English to the first year students of SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 7 Surakarta. In this research, the data are derived from event, informant, and document. There are three techniques in collecting the data namely: observation, interview, and document analysis. This research used field note and the documents that were used by the teacher. It appears from the research that teaching English, objective of teaching English, teaching procedure and learning activities are not consistent with communicative approach. The syllabus and instructional materials are suitable with school curriculum. The emphasis is on reading. The teaching English at SMP MUHAMMDIYAH 7 Surakarta is more practicing the tasks for the students, so they get good score in semester test in English subject.
