Abstract
The results of TIMSS assessment indicated that Indonesian students’ proficiency in solving mathematical issues was still considered weak. This might be caused by various types of errors made. Therefore, this article was written based on the results of a study evaluating students’ mistake in problem solving of math issues in TIMSS in the topic of algebra. This study aimed to identify students’ errors in terms of problem solving steps according to Polya. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. Twenty-nine students of 8th graders were asked to do nine problems related to algebra. The subject was ten students with errors most made in the test. Data was collected through paper test and students' interview. The research results showed that in solving knowning level problem, the students still did a mistake in carrying out the problem and looking back. The result of error analysis indicated that in solving applying level problem, the type of error that students made were planning problem solving, carrying out the plan and looking back. The results suggest there are four types of errors made for reasoning level problem such as understanding the problem, planning problem solving, carrying out the plan and looking back.
