Abstract
The major problem of this study is to reveal the coping behavior of Maximus in Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ Movie . The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the character of Maximus based on individual psychological analysis developed by Alfred Adler. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the script of Gladiator movie. While secondary data are reviews of the movie those are collected from various sources and other data which deal with the research such as from the website, journal and others referenced that has connection with the research. In analyzing the data, he applies two approaches, they are structural analysis approach and the individual psychological approach. Structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the movie. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, theme, intent or message, cast, mise-en-scene, cinematography, film editing, and sound. While, the individual psychological approach is used to analyze the coping behavior of Maximus that influences his personality. The result of the analysis shows that the personality of Maximus is influenced by his coping behavior that is dominantly shaped from his ambition to fight back the tyrant Commodus the son of Cesar. As the one who is different from his society, Maximus becomes the self reliant to his social life. He is a responsible man, gently, and not afraid to the problem that he faces on. Maximus’s personality is shaped dominantly from his coping behavior that brings him to be good man with the good personality.
