Abstract

The focus of this research is the expressive utterances and politeness strategy which are used by the characters in Frozen movie. This research aims at: (1) describing the illocutionary meaning of expressive utterances in Frozen movie and (2) describing the kinds of politeness strategies employed by the characters in Frozen movie. The data of the research are expressive utterances made by the characters in Frozen Movie. The techniques of collecting data are documentation and observation. In analyzing data of illocutionary act, the researcher uses the theory of performative of Austin and in analyzing data of politeness strategy, the researcher uses Face Threatening Act of Brown and Levinson. The result shows that (1) the researcher find 5 meaning of expressive utterances in Frozen movie, which are showing anger, happiness, sadness, panic, and surprised. The most dominant is express happiness and the percentage shows 31.70%. Then, (2) the researcher finds 4 politeness strategy, consist of 9 bald on record strategy, 2 off record strategy, 11 positive politeness strategy, and 7 negative politeness strategy. The characters mostly use the positive politeness strategy, which are 17 times and the percentage is 41.46%. The most dominant of expressive utterances is showing happiness, because it is an aristrocacy movie and usually the people express happiness in empire world. The most dominant of politeness strategy is the positive politeness strategy. It is mostly used by the characters because Frozen is an aristocracy movie, the kingdom’s life usually use more positive politeness in the daily life.
