Abstract

This study set out to examine social adjustment of foreign students in Muhammadiyah Surakarta University. The method of this research is qualitative method by phenomenology design. The samples in using the study were 6 foreign students who are studying in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The technique of collecting data is deepest interview, observation and documentation.Data analysis was used interactive model, analysis data and making a conclusion. The results of this study showed that overall foreign students in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta could adjust themselves well to the new environment.They are appropriate with some experiences about factors as obstacles in the process, adjusting when living in a new environment so that foreign students find several ways to deal with the problems at hand. The factors that influence the social adjustment of foreign students include 2 external factors were language and communication, interaction with other people, and social and cultural differences through differences in staple foods, climate, rules and social context. Internal factors include psychological of self-view, feelings of loneliness and longing, and family support and social support. Factors of physical condition are differences in sex and national origin.
