Abstract
Problem solving is an attempt made to solve the problems found. The ability to solve mathematical problems is a way of thinking in solving a problem related to mathematics. The purpose of this research is to describe the problem solving ability in solving the story problem of Two Variable Linear Equation System based on the steps of Polya VIII Grade Students of Semester of Semester of SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Surakarta. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis techniques are done interactively by reducing data, presenting data and drawing conclusions. Technique of taking subject based on certain considerations, so that obtained by six subject of class VIII A with high, medium, and low category. From the results of data analysis and discussion can be concluded that subjects with high ability have understood the problem, plan the problem, solve the problem and there is only one subject to re-examine the results of his work. Subjects with moderate and low ability are only able to understand the two given problems and do not re-examine the results of their work. The result of the students' work seems that in writing the subject does not write down the elements that are known and asked in the matter. In planning the subject matter also did not write the sentence matematikannya first. The results show that students have not used Polya's problem-solving strategy to understand the problem, plan the problem, and re-examine the problem solving writing.
