Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate language learning strategy used by the male and the female students to improve their speaking skill. the objectives of the study were : (1) to identify the learning strategies used by male and female students with good English speaking skill to improve their fluency in speaking. (2) to identify learning strategies used by them to develop their grammatical competence. (3)to identify learning strategies used by them to develop their pronunciation skill. (4) to identify learning strategies used by them to improve their vocabulary. (5) to investigate the similarities and differences of the learning strategies used by male and female students.It used descriptive qualitative research in the form of case study. The subjects of the research were students of twelfth grade of Madrasah Aliyah Al MukminSukoharjo in academic year 2016/2017 who have good English speaking skill. they are 2 male students and 2 female students. The technique in collecting data of the research were questionnaire, observation, interview, and documentation. The result of this study indicated that to develop fluency the male students applied 3 learning strategies skill: cognitive, meta-cognitive, and social strategies, while the female students applied 2 strategies: cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies. To develop grammatical competence, the male students applied 3 learning strategies: memory, cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies, while the female students applied only a strategies: cognitive strategies. The female students applied 2 learning strategies in developing pronunciation skill, they are cognitive strategies and social strategies. While the male students applied only cognitive strategies in developing pronunciation skill. In improving vocabulary competence, the male and female students applied memory, cognitive and metacognitive strategies. The similarities of LLS used by them that they used the memory strategies, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies and social strategies. The differences laid the female is more dominant and higher than the male students. Based on the result it can be concluded that There were four LLS used by the female students in developing speaking skill such as: memory strategies, cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies and social strategies.
