Abstract
Background : Carica rind (Carica pubescens) contains active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenols that are thought to have an antibacterial effect which can kill bacteria or inhibit bacterial growth. Objective : To study the antibacterial effect of ethanolic extract 70% of carica rind (Carica pubescens) on Salmonella typhi bacteria. Methods : This research is an experimental laboratory with post test only controlled group design. The bacteria used was Salmonella typhi, while the extract was the rind of carica fruit (Carica pubescens) with maseration method using ethanol 70%. The method used was well diffusion. Aquabidest was the negative control group, chloramphenicol was the positive control group, and the treatment groups were 70% ethanolic extract of Carica pubescens with concentrations of 12.55, 25%, and 50% placed on Mueller Hilton broth, incubated for 24 hours at 37° C. The inhibitory zone was then measured using a caliper. Results : The 70% ethanolic extract of carica rind (Carica pubescens) did not show any inhibitory zone in bacterial cultures of Salmonella typhi in any concentration. The result on the negative control group were not different, whereas the positive control group showed an average inhibitory zone of 7.3 mm. Conclusion : The 70% ethanolic extract of carica rind (Carica pubescens) at 12.5%, 25%, and 50% concentrations had no antibacterial effect on Salmonella typhi bacteria.
