Abstract
This research aims to (1) describe the grammatical meaning of the use of prefix in grade XI student essay in SMA Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang. (2) describes to the use of the most dominant types of prefix on a personal experience grade XI student in SMA Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang. The benefits of this research to increase knowledge about the use of prefix (affixation). The study was conducted with qualitative methods. The object of this research is the use of prefix on student essay of class XI SMA Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang.The data in this research are sentences on the student’s essay of personal experience. The sources of data in this research are sentences which contain prefix in the essay of personal experience. Data collection techniques in this research using documentation and literature study techniques. The data validity in this research is using triangulation technique.Data analysis in this research using content analysis. The results showed that (1) there were twenty-seven grammatical meanings produced, using more verb substitution functions. (2) the prefixes used in the personal experience of the students of grade XI SMA Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang there are seven prefixes: prefix; ber-; di-; me-; per-; se-; pem; and ter- and the most dominant prefixes used in the personal experience of the grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang is a prefixes of 15 data.
