Abstract

The leaves of chayote are one kind of vegetable crops that are used by the Indonesian people as a medicinal plant. Chayote leaves contain saponins, steroids, tannins, and flavonoids which are believed to have ability as an antibacterial. Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the main bacteria cause chronic periodontitis. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of chayote leaves (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. This study was an experimental research laboratory with The Post Test Only Control Group Design. The method that was used in antibacterial activity was diffusion method. It was divided into five treatment groups and two control groups. Each treatment group was given the ethanol extract of chayote leaves (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) with varying concentrations, i.e. 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80%. The ethanol extract of Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz leaves 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% concentrations had an effective antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis. Based on ANOVA test results, obtained sig value 0.000 (sig<0.05) and it could be concluded that there was influence of the ethanol extract of chayote leaves (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) concentrations on the Porphyromonas gingivalis growth.The conclusion is that giving ethanol extract of chayote leaves (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) affects the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. The 40% concentration of that is the most influential in inhibing the growth of those bacteria in difusi method.
