Abstract

This study is aimed at (1) examining the type of English error by eleventh year students based on the surface strategy taxonomy such as omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. (2) Examining the sources of errors such as interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, and context of learning. In this research, the researcher is used the qualitative method as the type of the research. This research was carried out at SMA Muhammaidiyah 09 Sambirejo Sragen especially in class eleventh. To collect the data the researcher only did one instrument if is a writing composition test. The study shows that (1) there are types of errors: omission 20 errors or 31, 25 %, addition 18 errors or 28, 125 %, misformation 22 errors or 34, 375 %, misordering 4 errors or 6, 25 %. So, the dominant error is a misformation error with the frequency (22 errors or 34, 375 %). (2) There are two types of sources of errors, they are: interlingual transfer10 errors or 58, 82%, intralingual transfer 7 errors or 41, 17%. The dominant source of error is an interlingual transfer.
