Abstract

In this research, the writer discusses anxiety in Robert Zemeckis’s Cast Away film. The objectives in this research are: to describe Cast Away film based on its structural elements and psychoanalytic approach. The type of this research is qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer applied the documentation analysis method by watching the Robert Zemekis’s Cast Away film. Then, the data are analyzed based on the structural elements and psychoanalytic approach as what proposed by Sigmund Frued theory. The technique of data collection in this research is watching the film twice or three times, reading the script, taking notes of the important part in both primary and secondary data sources, and browsing to the internet to get some information related to the topic. In analyzing the data, the writer employs classifying and verifying the data, also interpreting the data based on psychoanalysis theory conducted by Sigmund Freud. The conclusion of the research, the writer draws as follows. First, based on the structural analysis, Cast Away film focuses on the major character of Chuck Noland, because the film emphasizes on monologue. The setting of place is greatly on the beach. Robert Zemeckis wants to deliver a message that as ex-boy scouts, there are four basic elements, food, water, shelter and fire. Secondly, based on psychoanalytic approach, the conflict of Chuck’s personality is driven by id, ego and superego and many problems in his life are the factors that cause his anxiety.
