Abstract
This research aims at observing the implementation of teaching listening using songs to the second year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 GEMOLONG, the problems faced by the teacher and the students, and the teacher’s strategies to cope with the problems. In this research, the writer uses a qualitative research. The research was done on 9th May – 23th May, 2008. The writer gets the data of this research from event, informant, and document. The methods of collecting the data in this research are observation, interview, and documentation. After analyzing the data, the writer draws some conclusions. First the implementation of teaching listening using songs to the second year students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 GEMOLONG has a good result for the development of the students listening skill. By applying this technique, the students can not only train their listening skill, but also improve their pronunciation and their writing skill. Second there are some problems faced by teacher and students in process of teaching listening using songs. The problems faced by teacher are difficulty to choose a song, different capability of the students, difficulty to manage the class, and difficulty to motivate the students. The problems faced by students are limitation vocabulary, speed of song lyrics, and difficulty to express their idea. To cope with the problems, the teacher uses some strategies, namely using interesting song lyric and simple material, re-explaining the material and mixing the language, giving many exercises, advising and motivating the students about the importance of their activity in the lesson process, and selecting the suitable material for the students.
