Abstract

The object of the research is the novel entitled Jude the Obscure written by Thomas Hardy. The objective of the study is to examine how struggle for education and love is reflected in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure based on individual psychological approach and the structural elements. The research is conducted by using qualitative method. The writer uses two data sources namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data is novel Jude the Obscure written by Thomas Hardy. The secondary data sources are the other sources related to the analysis like some books and internet. The method of the data collection is library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. The result of the research is as follows: first, Jude the Obscure is Thomas Hardy’s literary work that tells us about the struggle for education of the main character Jude Fawley and his struggle for love towards conventional society. Second, the individual psychological analysis shows that the struggle for education and love of Jude Fawley comes from his fictional finalism. The last, Jude’s struggle for education and love cannot walk together. Jude must forget one to get another.
