Abstract

Our daily life aspects are full of signs including icon, index and symbol. The swear words are one of the ways speaking that used symbol. The objectives of this research are (1) to explain the variations of the symbol used in the Swear Words in Internet, (2) to explain the meaning of the swear words in Internet, and (3) to know the comparison between the symbol used in Swear Words in Indonesian and English used in Internet. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method by selecting the swear words data in internet. The source of the data is taken from internet database. The website address are http://insultmonger.com/swearing/indonesian.htm entitled Insult Monger for Indonesian swear words and http://www.noswearing.com/list.php entitled Bad Word List & Swear Filter written by Ryan for English swear words. This research employs the semiotic analysis, especially, the Saussure theory of sign. The results of the study show that (1) first, there are fifteen variations of swear words symbols in internet, they are animal symbol (wild animal, domestic animal and animal biological organ), biological organ symbol (male biological organ, female biological organ and neutral biological organ), excretory symbol, sexuality term symbol (sexuality act, sexual stimulation symbol, whore), bias attitude symbol (homo symbol and lesbian symbol), human symbol, secular symbol, imbecilic symbol, madness symbol, energy symbol, violent symbol, thing symbol, origin area symbol, curse symbol and a kind of job symbol. (2) Second, the meaning of swear words are expressing anger meaning, sexual code meaning and insulting term meaning. (3) Third, the comparison between symbols used in Indonesian and English swear words are in Indonesian swear words has the energy, madness and violent symbol while in English there is not in other hand English swear words has data for sexual stimulation symbol, lesbian symbol, origin area symbol, thing symbol, curse symbol and a kind of job symbol while in Indonesian there is not. The similarities between symbols used in Indonesian and English swear words are animal symbol, biological organ symbol, excretory symbol, sexuality term symbol for sexual act and whore symbol, bias attitude symbol for homo symbol, human symbol, sacred symbol and imbecilic symbol.
