Abstract
The study discusses English gambits employed in speaking class. The objectives of the research are to clarify the types of the English gambit and the intentions of the English gambits in speaking class. This research is qualitative research. The data are opening, closing, interrupting, expressing, opinions, repetitions, commentary, bringing up idea and returning taken from material of situational English conversation. The writer observes the classroom to collect the data by watching and noticing classroom events. To clarify the form, the writer refers to the linguistic form theory; in clarifying the intention of English gambit the writer employs speech acts theory. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that the types of English Gambits are opening, closing, interrupting, expressing, opinions, repetitions, commentary, bringing up idea and returning. Related to the intentions, the writer gets eleven kinds of intentions, namely, to introduce, to greet, to express pleasure, to interrupt, to ask opinion, to express opinion, to repeat, to ask repetition, to command, to change a topic, to bring up idea.
