Abstract

This research aims at describing problems encountered by English teachers in applying communicative approach and how teachers overcome the problems in applying communicative approach at SMP N 2 Sambi. This research focuses on the problems related to the components of communicative approach that the teachers use to teach English and problems encountered by them and their application at school. The type of this research a descriptive research. The subject of this research is English teachers at SMP N 2 Sambi and the object of this research is problems encountered by English teachers in SMP N 2 Sambi. The research is carried out in SMP N 2 Sambi in March 2008. The techniques of collecting the data are interview and observation, and document. The technique for analyzing data is descriptive method. Based on the result of data analysis, the problems faced by English teachers in applying communicative approach are first the teachers’ skill to apply the communicative approach is still poor, because they never have a training of communicative approach. Second, the school does not have adequate facility to support applying communicative approach. Third, the majority of the students are less motivated in English subject. The efforts done by the teachers to overcome these problems are increasing their mastering communicative approach and give support, motivation and advice to the learners.
