Abstract
This research paper is aimed at describing the implementation of teaching speaking using Natural Approach for the second year students of SMP AL ISLAM 1Surakarta in 2007/2008 Academic Year, and the problems faced by the teacher. The writer conducts a descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research are derived from event, informant, and document analysis. The data are quoted from the observation and interview with the teacher. Based on the data analysis, the writer draws some conclusions about teaching speaking using Natural Approach to the second year student of SMP AL ISLAM I Surakarta in 2007/2008 Academic Year as follows. First, Natural Approach is implemented in teaching speaking. The goal of teaching is based on an assessment of students needs. The teacher determines the situations in which they will use the target language and the sorts of topics they will use the target language and the sorts of topics they will have to communicate information about. Second, the teacher`s problems in teaching learning process are student’s mentality, the difference ability of the students, and difficulty to handle the large class.
