Abstract

This research paper is aimed to answer the two problems, namely, (1) the linguistic forms of English code mixing used in MTV Ampuh VJ (Video Jockey), and (2) the social functions used in MTV Ampuh VJ (Video Jockey). This research uses documentation methods to get the data, that is recording and note taking. The data of this research are English code mixing used in MTV Ampuh VJ in the form of word, phrase, clause, and sentence. The data source is taken from December 10-13, 2007.To analyze the linguistic forms of code mixing, the researcher uses the grammatical theory that consists of sentence, clause, phrase, and word. To analyze the social functions of code mixing, the researcher uses sociolinguistic perspective and aspect on code mixing.The result of the study shows that code mixing used in MTV Ampuh VJ contains 40 data of words which can be classified into 16 data of nouns, 2 data of adjectives, 10 data of conjunctions, 8 data of verbs, and 4 data of adverbs; 65 data of phrases, classified into 15 data of noun phrases, 11 data of adjective phrases, 3 data of verb phrases, 13 data of prepositional phrases, and 23 data of adverb phrases; 12 data of clauses which classifies into 12 data of main clauses; and the last is 35 data of sentences which are classified into 9 data of compound-complex sentences, 10 data of statements, and 16 data of imperative sentences. The social functions of code mixing used in MTV Ampuh VJ are: (a) to show identity: to informs the society that they are young modern people; (b) to show status: to increase their social status in the society, because they live in big city, in the modern era, and the modern live style; (c) to show their educational background: to show their educational background, because may be they graduate from the university with excellent result; (d) to show ability: to show they have good talent to be a good presenter, modern, and stylist presenter.
