Abstract
The Sangiran Early Man Site Museum area in Sragen Regency is an educational tourism destination recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and possesses significant scientific, historical, and cultural value. However, tourism activities in the area face challenges related to uneven visitor distribution among museum clusters and limited supporting commercial facilities, including culinary services, souvenir retail, accommodation, and educational and recreational spaces. This design study aims to formulate commercial facilities that support visitor needs while maintaining the character of the Sangiran area. The methods include literature review, precedent studies, site analysis, user and activity analysis, and design synthesis. A contextual architectural approach is applied through the adaptation of form, scale, materials, massing, and responses to local environmental and cultural conditions. The design results indicate that the area can be developed through an integrated composition of a main commercial building, artisan facilities, theatre, prayer facility, management office, service area, accommodation, playground, and Mini Excavation Park. The main commercial building uses a wide-span concept and transforms the character of the Wiro Sangir traditional headcloth into a dynamic building mass, while the accommodation units adapt the Joglo form. Site responses include maximising southern and western views, utilising natural ventilation, controlling noise from the northern side, and separating public and service access. The resulting design integrates commercial, educational, recreational, and accommodation functions while reinforcing the local identity of the Sangiran area.
