Abstract

Parental divorce is a life event that can generate significant psychological impact on adolescents, making the ability to adapt and recover an important phenomenon to understand. This study aimed to explore the resilience strategies developed by junior high school adolescents in adapting to the impact of parental divorce. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving five participants aged 13–15 years who had experienced parental divorce with a divorce duration ranging from one to ten years, selected through purposive sampling with the assistance of the school guidance counselor. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews based on Reivich and Shatté's (2002) seven aspects of resilience and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2021) six-phase thematic analysis. Data credibility was strengthened through member checking with all participants. The findings revealed seven main themes: emotion regulation through activities and self-expression, social support as a source of strength, acceptance and self-control strategies, religiosity as a source of strength, self-efficacy and independence, future orientation, and the process of recovery and post-adversity growth. The findings indicate that adolescent resilience develops gradually through a combination of active strategies and environmental support, with religiosity - particularly patience (sabar) and surrender to God (tawakkal) - emerging as a distinctive component in the context of Indonesian Muslim adolescents that has not been widely captured within Western theoretical frameworks. This study provides implications for school counselors, parents, and future researchers in supporting adolescents' sustained adaptation following parental divorce.
