Abstract
Market revitalization in various regions has often not fully succeeded in improving the quality of activities and space utilization. Problems such as irregular zoning, ineffective circulation systems, and the emergence of underutilized spaces (dead space) on upper floors still frequently occur. This condition indicates that market design tends to focus solely on physical aspects, without considering user behavioral engineering and the shifting of community consumption patterns in the digital era. Randudongkal Market is one of the traditional market that experiencing these problems. Based on the results of the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), a systemic failure was found between the existing spatial layout and the behavioral needs of the users. This triggers a loss of spatial orientation (wayfinding), territorial boundary violations by merchants, and avoidance behavior from visitors, which ultimately results in the weakening of the economic ecosystem at Randudongkal Market. This study aims to redesign Randudongkal Market using a Behavioral Architecture approach. The methodology used includes literature studies, field observations, and POE analysis based on the Habitability Framework to map the technical, functional, and psychological failures of the building. The design result produces a market concept with a multiple-massing approach that separates wet and dry zones to suppress sensory stress (stress reduction). Design strategies include the demarcation of territorial boundaries using materials, the implementation of inclusive circulation, and the provision of a Lifestyle Anchor as The Third Place to revive dead spaces. This design is expected to create a market ecosystem that is hygienic, organized, adaptive to user behavior, and capable of restoring the economic vitality and social interaction of the community.
