Abstract
The increasing elderly population in Surakarta City has led to significant changes in social structures, including a shift from extended families to nuclear families. This phenomenon has resulted in reduced care support for the elderly within households, triggering risks of social isolation and a decline in psychological well-being. Furthermore, existing senior housing is currently dominated by rigid institutional concepts, which can exacerbate the cognitive conditions of residents. This study aims to design Active Aging Housing in Surakarta by applying a Neuroarchitecture approach. The primary focus of the design is to create a therapeutic living space that bridges the need for independent housing with optimal neural stimulation support. The design strategy focuses on manipulating architectural elements, including natural lighting, the use of vegetation as a multisensory stimulant, and the application of warm materials to foster a sense of belonging. The design results demonstrate that the optimization of green open space within medium-density residential zones and the use of lightweight roof structures, such as the waffle grid system, create an inclusive and non-intimidating environment. The massing is organized in a low-rise clustered layout to maintain a human scale and facilitate spatial orientation for the elderly. This project is expected to serve as a prototype for productive and independent senior living that restores cognitive function through the harmonious interaction between architecture and brain performance in the urban context of Surakarta.
