Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between empathy and self-control on cyberbullying among adolescent social media users. The research is grounded in the phenomenon of increasing digital platform usage intensity among adolescents, which implies a potential escalation of aggressive online behaviors. Participants comprised 290 active students from SMAN 6 Surakarta, aged 15-18 years, consisting of 88 males (30%) and 202 females (70%). The inclusion criterion required participants to be active social media users for a minimum of 3 hours per day. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design and proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected online via Google Forms using three standardized instruments: the Cyberbullying Scale, the Empathy Scale, and the Self-Control Scale. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression. The results indicate that empathy and self-control simultaneously exert a significant positive effect on cyberbullying (F = 11.258, p = .003), with a coefficient of determination of 68.7%. Partially, empathy shows a significant positive effect (B = 0.101, p = .039), as does self-control (B = 0.191, p = .044). The study concludes that empathy and self-control capacities significantly predict cyberbullying dynamics among adolescents. These findings imply the importance of developing psychological intervention programs and digital literacy initiatives in educational institutions, focusing on strengthening cognitive-affective empathy and impulse regulation training as a strategic effort to minimize cyberbullying behaviors and foster healthier digital interactions among adolescents.
