Abstract

The increasing demand for affordable housing has become a growing issue amidst current economic conditions and changing work patterns. Fresh graduates, workers affected by layoffs, freelancers, and startup entrepreneurs often face financial limitations and are unable to access formal housing. Meanwhile, conventional rental housing such as boarding houses is considered inadequate in supporting residents’ living needs, productivity, and social interaction. This condition creates the need for transitional housing that functions not only as a temporary place to live, but also as a space for self-development, community building, and economic activities. This design project aims to create a community living ecosystem (community living hub) capable of accommodating living, working, networking, and entrepreneurial activities within an integrated area. The co-living concept is implemented through the provision of private micro-housing units combined with communal facilities such as coworking spaces, social interaction areas, and commercial spaces. The design applies a contextual architectural approach by considering the characteristics of the Solo Baru area, tropical climate conditions, activity patterns, and spatial needs in the modern era. The design outcome is expected to become an alternative form of urban housing that is more feasible, adaptive, and affordable, while providing comfortable and sustainable spatial quality.
