Abstract

The roasting process is a crucial stage in coffee processing because it determines the flavor, aroma, and overall quality of the coffee beans. In household-scale and small-scale enterprises, temperature control is generally performed manually, resulting in inconsistent roasting quality. This study was conducted to develop an ESP32-based coffee roasting system with web-based monitoring to facilitate the control and monitoring of the roasting process. The system employs two K-type thermocouples with MAX6675 modules to measure the temperatures of the coffee beans and the roasting drum, while the heating element is controlled using a Solid State Relay (SSR). Temperature data, process status, roasting duration, and emergency status are transmitted to Firebase and displayed on a website in real time. Experimental results indicate that the thermocouple sensors provide good measurement accuracy with a low error compared to a reference measuring instrument. The web-based monitoring system successfully displays data with an average delay of approximately 3 seconds and allows the roasting process to continue normally even when the internet connection is interrupted, as all control operations are executed locally by the ESP32. The system also successfully implements an Emergency Stop feature through both a physical button and the web interface. Based on the experimental results, the system is capable of achieving Light Roast at 185°C for 15 minutes, Medium Roast at 200°C for 20 minutes, and Dark Roast at 215°C for 25 minutes.
