Abstract
Background: The increasing prevalence of prediabetes in adolescents is a serious concern both globally and nationally. Various risk factors contributing to this condition include inappropriate carbohydrate and fat consumption patterns, obesity, low physical activity, and a family history of diabetes, which, if left untreated, can progress to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between carbohydrate intake and fat intake with prediabetes incidence among adolescents in Surakarta City. Methods: This study applied a cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 197 senior high school adolescents selected via multistage random sampling. Dietary intake was assessed using the SQ-FFQ, prediabetes status was confirmed through capillary fasting blood glucose testing via spectrophotometry, and data were analyzed using Fisher's Exact test. Results: The proportion of excessive carbohydrate intake was 43.1%, normal carbohydrate intake 36.5%, and deficient carbohydrate intake 20.3%. The proportion of excessive fat intake was 39.1%, deficient fat intake 31.5%, and normal fat intake 29.4%. Prediabetes was detected in 8.1% of participants. No significant association was found between carbohydrate intake (p=0.795) or fat intake (p=0.642) and prediabetes. Conclusion: Neither carbohydrate nor fat intake demonstrated a significant correlation with prediabetes among adolescents in Surakarta City, likely due to the intact metabolic capacity of adolescents in maintaining glucose homeostasis
