Abstract
This study characterizes students’ critical thinking skills in solving mathematical problems in relation to extrovert and introvert personality types. It focuses on how students’ understanding of problems, construction of mathematical models, and development of problem-solving techniques are influenced by personality type. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was used to select four Grade VIII.5 students from SMP Negeri 3 Surakarta for this descriptive qualitative research. Data were collected through retrospective interviews and a critical thinking test on the topic of a system of linear equations in two variables (SPLDV). Data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing were employed for data analysis. The results show that extroverted students tend to take initiative quickly, engage actively in discussions, and are willing to take risks. However, they often overlook the evaluation stage and fail to review their answers independently. Conversely, introverted students think carefully, methodically, and with thorough consideration. They adopt a systematic and comprehensive approach to problem-solving, yet they tend to make decisions slowly and have limited social interaction. These findings suggest that the strengths of students’ critical thinking indicators in mathematical problem-solving are influenced by personality type. The study concludes that, to optimally develop critical thinking skills, teaching methodologies should be adapted to students personality tendencies.
