Abstract

This study aims to analyze the obstacles faced by students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in developing their listening skills using the Duolingo application. As one of the technology-based language learning applications, Duolingo has been widely used due to its accessibility and variety of exercises. However, certain limitations in its use may affect the effectiveness of learning, particularly in listening skills. This research employs a qualitative approach with data collection techniques that include in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The participants are students who have actively used Duolingo for one semester. The results of the study reveal several major obstacles, namely: (1) limited materials that do not match the students’ proficiency levels, (2) difficulties in understanding accents and the speed of speech in audio recordings, (3) limited feedback on errors in listening tasks, and (4) technical issues such as unstable internet connections. These obstacles are further compounded by students’ lack of motivation for independent learning. The study concludes that although Duolingo is an effective supplementary tool for language learning, adjustments in learning strategies are needed to better suit students’ needs. The research recommends the use of additional supporting applications, integration of Duolingo with classroom learning, and supplementary training to improve listening comprehension. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to the development of more effective technology-based language learning methods. Keywords: Obstacles, Listening, Duolingo, Perception, Strategies.
