Abstract

Student exchange programs provide an essential platform for students to expand their global perspectives and gain experience through direct cultural interaction. South Korea is a popular destination due to its technological advancements and rich cultural heritage. However, international students often face significant challenges adapting to South Korean society, which is deeply rooted in Confucian values emphasizing hierarchy, politeness, and honor. South Korea's strict and competitive education system further contrasts with the more open systems in many Western countries. Cultural differences, such as communication styles and social hierarchies, contribute to culture shock, leading to confusion and frustration. Language barriers, particularly the complexity of the Korean language, add to the challenges. Non-verbal communication norms also may cause foreign students to feel isolated. This study explores the adaptation strategies employed by Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta students during their study abroad experience in South Korea. Using qualitative methods, this research aims to understand the strategies these students use to navigate their academic and social environments.
