Abstract
Students are individuals who have the responsibility to complete their academic assignments on time. However, most students cannot complete their academic assignments properly, so they do academic procrastination. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the intensity of social media use and self-control with academic procrastination in students. The sample in this study were 307 students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, class of 2021, using a sampling technique, namely convenience sampling. The data collection method was in the form of a scale of intensity of social media use, self-control, and academic procrastination which was distributed via Google Form. This study is a quantitative study using multiple linear regression analysis techniques with the help of SPSS version 25. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the variables of intensity of social media use and self-control with academic procrastination in students (F = 49,665 and significance value = 0,000). Correlation analysis between the variables of intensity of social media use and academic procrastination shows a significant positive relationship (β = 0,325; t = 6,490; and significance value = 0.000). In addition, there is a significant negative relationship between the variables of self-control and academic procrastination (β = -0,345; t = 6,905; and significance value = 0,000). The effective contribution of both independent variables affecting the dependent variable shows a result of 24.6%. Thus, this study reveals that increasing intensity of social media use and decreasing self-control will affect students' academic procrastination.
