Abstract

Pekalongan City is a city located in the northern part of Central Java and directly adjacent to the Java Sea. The increase in built-up land and the reduction of vegetation land will result in an increase in surface temperature which is the cause of the urban heat island phenomenon in urban areas. The objectives of this study are: 1. To determine the distribution ofland cover and landsurface temperature in Pekalongan City in 2013 and 2023. 2. Analyse the influence of the development of built-up land cover on the increase of land surface temperature in Pekalongan City in 2013 and 2023. 3. Analysing the distribution of UHI against land cover in relation to land surface temperature increase in Pekalongan City in 2013 and 2023. The method used in this research is Landsat 8 image processing to produce land cover classification, surface temperature classification, and urban heat island classification. Simple linear regression test was used to determine the influence between the development of built-up land and the increase in average surface temperature. The results show that built-up land cover in 2013 and 2023 is dominated by the distribution in the West Pekalongan sub-district. The distribution of vegetated land in 2013 was dominated in the East Pekalongan and South Pekalongan sub-districts, while in 2023 it was spread in the southern part of Pekalongan City. The distribution of open land in 2013 dominated in the East Pekalongan sub-district, while in 2023 it will only dominate in the northern part of Pekalongan City. The distribution of land cover of water bodies in 2013 and 2023 is mostly dominated in the North Pekalongan sub-district. In 2013, the dominant surface temperature distribution was class II temperature (27.53-30.48°C) with an area of 10.69 km2 spread across the South Pekalongan sub-district. While in 2023 it changed to temperature class IV (33.45-36.40°C) with an area of 13.51 km2 spread across 3 areas namely West Pekalongan District, East Pekalongan District, and South Pekalongan District. The simple linear regression results show that there is a 58,7% influence between the development of built-up land and the increase in surface temperature. The UHI area in 2013 was 19.09 km2 and in 2023 was 27.88 km2. The increase in UHI area is influenced by the increasing threshold value. West Pekalongan sub-district consistently has the largest Urban Heat Island area, mainly on built-up land, while North Pekalongan dominates in the distribution of Urban Heat Island on water bodies and open land.
