Abstract

Water is a vital resource for life, but access to clean water is still a challenge for some people. This study aims to develop and test an automatic water filtration system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) using a turbidity sensor. This system integrates the Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time monitoring and notification of water quality via the telegram platform. This study began with a literature study and system development based on previous research. This system uses NodeMCU ESP32 as the main microcontroller that connects the turbidity sensor to other components. The turbidity sensor works by measuring the intensity of light scattered on water particles to determine the level of turbidity. This filtration system applies a mechanical filtration method using media in the form of cotton, sand and broken tiles which aims to remove physical particles and dirt from the water. The filtration process will run based on the performance of the solenoid valve and DC pump which allows repeated filtration according to water conditions. Water is considered clean if the sensor detects a value of 0-5 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) and is considered dirty if it has a value of 5-25 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU). Sensor measurements show that clean water has a value of 3.81 NTU, slightly dirty water has a value of 5.83 NTU, dirty water has a value of 8.22 NTU, and very dirty water has a value of 9.38 NTU. The filtration process requires different durations, clean water does not require a filtration process, slightly dirty water requires 2 minutes, dirty water requires 5 minutes, and very dirty water requires 9 minutes. The test results show that the turbidity sensor is effective in monitoring water turbidity accurately and responsively, supporting the optimization of the automatic water filtration process. This system is able to send notifications to the user's telegram, allowing direct monitoring of water conditions and providing a quick response to changes in water quality.
