Abstract

Mental retardation is characterized by limited intellectual function below the average level. Problems that often arise regarding nutrition in mentally retarded children are malnutrition, overweight, and micronutrient deficiencies. Mothers' knowledge about balanced nutrition influences behavior and attitudes in choosing food for their children. The aim of this research was to determine the description of mothers' knowledge about nutrition and the nutritional status of students at SMA Negeri Pati and SLB Negeri Purwosari Kudus. This study applied descriptive quantitative research. Involved 57 respondents, mothers and high school students from SLB Negeri Pati and SLB Negeri Purwosari Kudus. Sampling was taken using total sampling technique. Knowledge data was collected through questionnaires, while weight and height data were obtained from each class teacher. Data is processed using crosstab. The results showed that 79.1% of respondent mothers had good knowledge, 26.3% had sufficient knowledge, and 1.8% had poor knowledge. For the nutritional status of high school students, 28.1% had undernourished status, 36.8% had normal nutritional status, 14.0% had more nutritional status, and 21.1% had obese nutritional status. In conclusion, the level of knowledge of mothers about nutrition is mostly good and the nutritional status of Tunagrahita High School students has normal nutritional status. However, there were statements where the mother respondents answered incorrectly (<10%), namely about the concept of balanced nutrition, sources and functions of food ingredients, and how to process food. This knowledge needs to be further improved so that mothers can pay attention to the food needs of their children's bodies. Keywords: mother's knowledge, nutritional status, mental retardation
