Abstract

This research explores violations of Grice's principles of cooperation in netizen interactions with the CNN Breaking News Twitter account and understands the online communication patterns used by them. This research aims to identify and explain violations of Grice's cooperative principles in netizen responses to CNN Breaking News on Twitter during November 2023. A qualitative descriptive method was used by collecting data on netizen responses to CNN Breaking News tweets through documentation and recording. The results of the analysis show that netizens violated four types of maxim violations with a total of 101 maxim violations: 19(18.81%) violated the maxim of quantity, 13(12.87%) violated the maxim of quality, 48(47.52%) violated the maxim of ralation, and 21 (20.79%) violation of maxim manner. The reasons behind such offenses include expressions of emotion, sympathy, personal opinions, innuendo, derogatory behavior, and conversation that changes direction.
