Abstract
Pesantren is a place to seek religious knowledge which has its own rules and demands. Santri generally have high motivation in providing strength to adapt themselves to Pesantren. However, there are still problems with adapting to the environment in new students such as frequent crying and difficulty following memorization. This study aims to determine the adjustment behavior of first-year students at Pesantren. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach with 6 students. Informants were grouped into three, (1) santri having difficulty adapting; (2) students have adapted, but not consistent; (3) students have been able to adapt well. Data obtained by interviews and observations with thematic analysis. The results is: (1) The problems experienced by students in the first year are related to the history of the students entering Pesantren. (2) The ability and speed of self-adjustment is influenced by the problems encountered, the process of thinking about dealing with problems, and environmental support. (3) In the process of adjustment, male students focus on internal factors and female students focus on external factors. The conclusion is adjustment of each student is different, this is influenced by various factors, namely the problems faced, the process of, the support from the environment and internal motivation.
