Abstract

Electroplating is a coating method commonly used to improve the quality and durability of metal surfaces. Electroplating is a metal coating technique by deposition on electrodes to form a surface with different properties or dimensions from the base metal. This research was carried out with the aim of analyzing the roughness and surface hardness values of gray cast iron both before and after nickel-brass plating using the electroplating method. Roughness testing is carried out using a Surface Roughness Tester to determine the roughness value, while hardness testing is carried out using the Rockwell Hardness Tester method to determine the hardness value. The results of roughness testing using the Surface Roughness Tester showed the highest average roughness value for the raw material specimen, namely 4.504875 micrometers. Meanwhile, for specimens that had been coated with nickel-brass, an average roughness value of 3.06675 micrometers was obtained. The Rockwell hardness test results showed that the highest average hardness value for the coated specimens was 88.6 HRB. Meanwhile, the average hardness value for raw material specimens was 84.33 HRB.
