Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the silicon element of gray cast iron, then the basic material composition is added silicon with variations of 150 grams, 200 grams, and 250 grams. Specimens were prepared by melting gray cast iron and then pouring it into a ladle. Next, mix the silicone variation into the ladle. This study used 3 test methods, namely chemical composition testing, metallographic testing, and Brinell hardness testing. The results of the chemical composition test showed that the percentage of silicon in the specimen increased when silicon was added. The metallographic test results showed that the gray cast iron in this study had graphite and pearlite phases. The shape of gray cast iron is getting bigger and thicker when silicon is added. And the results of the Brinell hardness test showed that the hardness value of gray cast iron decreased when silicon was added.
