Abstract

This research paper is aimed to described the problems faced by students in speaking English and to find out the solutions to overcome speaking problems. The researcher uses qualitative descriptive research design. The participants of this study are 31 students from B class. The instrument of this research are observation, interview, and questionnaire for collecting the data. The results of this study show: there are several problems faced by students based on gender in speaking English such as lack of vocabulary, limited knowledge of grammar, lack of pronunciation, and lack of confidence. But for male students they do not have problems in confidence, while female students have problems in confidence. And also, the solutions of speaking problems such as improving vocabulary by listening English songs, find the meaning, memorize, and noting difficult word, and also read English books or novels. For improving knowledge of grammar, they have solutions using online platforms, and taking extra English lessons. For improving pronunciation, they have solutions by using frequently practice, practice with friends, and using online platforms. For improving self-confidence students have solutions by frequent practice and speaking.
