Abstract
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is a type of electric arc welding with a gas shield. This study aims to determine the mechanical properties of Mild Steel after experiencing the MIG welding process using currents of 80 A, 90 A, 100 A, 110 A and 120 A at the DCEN polarity. This welding uses ER70S-6 electrodes. The type of connection used is a single v groove seam with an angle of 45°. The standard used for the manufacture of tensile test specimens is ASTM E8 M, chemical composition testing uses the ASTM E415-08 standard, microstructure testing uses the ASTM E3-01 standard. The tensile test produced the highest average tensile stress at a welding current of 120 A of 379.12 N/mm2 and the highest average value of strain was also found at a current of 120 A of 3.66 mm. The results of testing the microstructure with a magnification of 100X on a scale of 70μm showed that in the HAZ region the ferrite and pearlite grains formed were smaller than the parent metal, in the weld area the grain structure formed was softer. The results of the chemical composition test yielded the main elements namely (Fe) 98.10%, (C) 0.086%, (Mn) 1.105%, (Si) 0.0320% and the dominating elements were (Fe) 98.10% and (Mn) 1.105%.
